Communities around Vhembe region were urged to help promote their own heritage by naming some local streets, stadiums, and community halls after their own fallen heroes who were liberation icons. “We have to name some of our streets, community halls, clinics and hospitals after our own liberation icons, such as George Phadagi, Sparks Ramagoma and Tshifhiwa Muofhe, among others. By giving them recognition, we will be making the communities and young people aware that the democracy we are enjoying now does not come easy,” said the general manager of the National Heritage Council, Mr Thendo Ramagoma. He was speaking during a Heritage Route business dinner at the PorcheVilla Hotel outside Thohoyandou on Friday. At the event, the Vhembe district municipality, National Heritage Council and Limpopo Tourism Agency bade farewell to some visitors touring heritage sites and tourisms attractions. The visitors hailed from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and the Northern Cape and they toured various places, such as the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe Heritage Site, The Big Tree, Dzata Ruins and Phiphidi. Representing the visitors during the tour, Mr Desmond Makosa from Zimbabwe Tourism said the tour to various tourist attractions and heritage sites in Vhembe had been a learning experience for him and the others. According to him, the cultural heritage must be preserved at all cost and their partnership with Vhembe District will help to share culture and tourism.
