PLACES IN ME – The VOICES of PLATFONTEIN’S YOUTH

A photovoice exhibition with the !Xun and Khwe of Platfontein

July-August 2023

This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between an international research team, COSMO-ART, two Platfontein-based NGOs, the Southern African San Development Organisation (SASDO) and San Community Development (SANCD) and various departments of Sol Plaatje University. Logistically and financially, this project was supported by IFAS-Recherche, McGregor Museum and Northern Cape Tourism Authority.

The project comes from a common desire to gather together and make visible the perspectives that young people in Platfontein have on their place in South African society through the way they see the place where they live. Equipped with cameras, the project was to document different aspects of their local environment that are important, relevant and interesting to them. Then, interviews conducted in 2022 made it possible to collect the authors’ points of view on their pictures. The exhibition therefore proposes a dialogue between photos and expressions by the nine young women and men who took part in the photovoice project.

The photographs and voices of Platfontein’s young people speak of beauty, suffering, aspirations, disappointments and of shifting identities. In this visual exploration, the images capture and convey the individual perspectives of the authors, how they see themselves, how they define and relate to the world, and what they perceive as important or different.

Two openings:

– 1st July 2023 at !XUNKHWESA COMBINED SCHOOL in PLATFONTEIN, at 11AM, with KAJUNDU DANCE GROUP Performance.

– 7th July 2023, at SOL PLAATJE UNIVERSITY, at 6PM, with WOKURI DANCE GROUP Performance.

Between these two opening dates, the exhibition will be open for the visits at the !Xunkhwesa Combined School (until 6 July) and then move to Sol Plaatje University, for the second opening on 7 July, 6 pm. Then, the exhibition will stay at Sol Plaatje University until the end of August.

Afterwards, the exhibition is planned to circulate between various venues: the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley (September), IFAS-Recherche in Johannesburg, and other locations are under discussion. The design of the exhibition in the form of kakemonos is intended to allow for easy circulation of the exhibition.
