EXPLORE THE BATTLEFIELDS ROUTE
The Battlefields Route offers visitors the opportunity to relive the Anglo-Boer War between Great Britain and the Boer Republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, which took place from 1899 to 1902. The Northern Cape played a decisive role in this conflict, most notably through the famous Siege of Kimberley. You can explore the events, victories, and setbacks of the siege at the Magersfontein and McGregor Museums.
A short journey to Hopetown leads you to the Hopetown Concentration Camp Cemetery, located on the farm Doornbult. It has been recognised as one of the most significant Anglo-Boer War memorial sites in South Africa. Nearby, visitors can also explore additional historical and archaeological sites, including the Orange River Station, remnants of British military camps, and a well-preserved blockhouse, all offering powerful insights into this pivotal chapter of the country’s history.
