KIMBERLEY TO HOST HOCKEY FESTIVAL
The Northern Cape Hockey Federation will be hosting the KC March Easter Hockey Festival from 28 – 31 March at the Northern Cape Astro Facility in Kimberley. The event, named after sports administrator and ambassador Kenneth March, is the only national club tournament sanctioned by the South African Hockey Association and has been circulating to key hockey centres around the country annually since 1997.
Men’s and ladies’ teams from across the country will compete in the A and B league sections over the four-day duration of the tournament. The festival is considered as a showcase for top hockey talent from some of the leading clubs and tertiary institutions teams in the country. As part of the South African Hockey Association’s development strategy, eight local primary schools have been identified to receive hockey kits to further promote and grow the sport.
Representatives from various sporting bodies and local dignitaries will host a media briefing and awards ceremony on Saturday morning at 09h00 at the Garden Court Hotel, including the chairperson of the Northern Cape Hockey Federation and project manager of the SA Hockey Association Gary Dolley. Keynote addresses will be delivered by the president of SASCOC Gideon Sam and Farrel Moses, president of the Northern Cape Sports Confederation.
The tournament will take place on the Northern Cape Hockey Federation’s synthetic astro turf courts, which were opened in July 2011 after a significant collaboration between the provincial government and industry role-players. According to Sharron Lewis, CEO of the Northern Cape Tourism Authority, this hockey tournament is once again proof that the Northern Cape has the facilities to attract a great variety of sporting events. “Without the proper facilities, we would not have been able to welcome the top hockey players in the country to the Northern Cape. Events such as these are cementing our reputation in the sports tourism industry and we hope that the contestants and their supporters will take the opportunity to explore our beautiful city and the unique and diverse tourism offerings in Kimberley and surrounding areas.”
