Fifteen tourism establishments in the Northern Cape have been nominated in the accommodation category for the inaugural Lilizela Tourism Awards, launched by South African Tourism at INDABA 2013.  The awards programme is the first of its kind to acknowledge and commend tourism businesses that have set global benchmarks in excellence.

The Lilizela Tourism Awards celebrate global excellence in tourism focusing on service excellence, emerging tourism entrepreneurship and sustainable tourism development.  The programme is led by the National Department of Tourism (NDT) and managed and delivered by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA), the only official and formal quality assurance body for the tourism industry and a business unit of South African Tourism.

The Northern Cape nominees for this award cover a wide range of tourism ventures ranging from camping sites, commercial hotels, private game reserves, guest houses and lodges to self-catering establishments and are located throughout the province.

Three tourism regions in the province are well represented with the Diamond Fields scoring nominations for the Kimberley Road Lodge, Garden Court Kimberley, Mattanu Private Game Reserve outside Kimberley, At Judy’s Guest House in Kimberley, Kathuhari Guesthouse in the thriving mining town of Kathu as well as Douglas establishments Broadwater Lodge and Villiera Guest House, a country home on the banks of the Vaal River.

Keeping up the provincial honours is the Green Kalahari region with nominations for the conference and wedding venue Naba Lodge in Upington and other accommodation establishments in the regional capital Riverside Guest House, 164 Silver Bull Guest House and Browns Manor Guest House.  The Kathula Farm Lodge just outside of town and the African Vineyard Guest House in Kanoneiland  complete the region’s list of nominees.  The Northern Cape nominees list is completed by the quaint Katryn’s B&B in Calvinia in the heart of the Namakwa region.
