Stary Stary Night

Whilst Northern Cape occupies over a third of South Africa’s landscape, the sparse population here means that it’s diverse desert, mountain ranges and majestic rivers reign supreme in this untamed land, making this a must-see destination for campers seeking culture, connection and sanctuary.

Flowing gracefully from East to West, between Western Cape and Namibia, the Orange River is one of nature’s greatest spectacles and boasts some of the best riverside campsites in Northern Cape.

Bask in the starlight of uninterrupted night skies or shower in the open air whilst your mind escapes amongst the Richtersveld Desert’s vast, arid landscape. You’ll never tire of the plethora of birds, flora and fauna staring back at you!

Whether you’re a keen fisherman or a lazy, read-a-book-under-the-trees kind of camper, these riverside camping spots might just be the nudge you need to start packing the tent.

Here are a few unfamiliar spots to consider:

Based in Vioolsdrif beside the Orange River, Fiddlers Creek glamping and camping site is ideal for travellers from both South Africa and Namibia. It’s also from here that you can go on a river rafting adventure which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Fiddlers Creek riverside campsite is equipped with all the necessary facilities, with two ablution blocks that have hot and cold running water.

Khamkirri Camping is highly recommended for self catering in Kakamas for tourists visiting the Green Kalahari region. The campsiteoffers accommodation in Kakamas along the banks of the Orange River. The camp is a family orientated destination where children, friends and family feel at home. The campsites are spacious with lush grass and large indigenous Camelthorn trees.
