The Roaring Sands of the Kalahari

 

Witsand Nature Reserve is a scenic park, teeming with bird life, including the Namaqua sandgrouse, the sociable weaver (with their huge nests) and Africa’s smallest raptor- the Pygmy Falcon.

It further features impressive golden and red sand dunes better known as the roaring sands of the Kalahari reaching up to sixty meters high surrounded by copper-red Kalahari sand, Acacia woodland, and the Langberg Mountain range.

With excellent facilities and a wide range of nature-based activities Witsand is an ideal family friendly eco destination.

We invite you to come and experience the home of the famous “Brulsand” or Roaring Sands of the Kalahari.

Witsand offers a choice of accommodation to suit all needs including universal access. All accommodation options are superbly positioned to allow for privacy and a real Kalahari experience.

Conference Facilities

Witsand Nature Reserve boast a four-star conference center which can accommodate small functions and conferences in typical Kalahari surroundings. The adjoining enclosed lapa/dining area can cater for up to 80 people. Catering for conference groups can be pre-booked (menus available on request).

The conference Centre offers:

  • Seating for 35 people in a u-shape style
  • Seating for 50 people in classroom style
  • Air-conditioning
  • Welll equipped with audio visual equipment

Information Centre:

  • Various exhibitions, nature books, magazines and videos to view
  • Displays natural and archaeological treasures occurring in the area

What to see and Do

Bird Life

Witsand Nature Reserve is a birding paradise and is teeming with bird life. The more than 170 bird species includes the Kori Bustards (biggest flying bird in Africa), Secretary Bird, Crimson-Breasted Boubou or Shrike, Lilac-Breasted Roller, Namaqua sandgrouse, sociable weaver (with their huge nests) owls and Africa’s smallest raptor – the Pygmy Falcon can be seen here.

Our well-maintained bird hide afford great opportunity for bird watching and photography.

Mammals

The 3 500 hectare park features Keloid Kalahari Bushveld, Oranje River Nama Karoo and the Kalahari mountain Bushveld supporting more than 16 antelope species such oryx, red hartebeest, steenbok, springbok and common duiker.

Smaller animals include the Mongoose, Ground squirrel and the meerkats.

Nocturnal mammals found at Witsand are the elusive pangolin, aardvark, aardwolf, bat eared fox and small cats such as the Genet and African wild cats.

Nature Based Activities

 

We have an extensive list of nature-based activities suitable for all ages.

  • Botanical meander (3km trail)
  • 4×4 trail on neighbouring property

Recommended Directions:

  • From Griekwastad on the N8 to the Witsand turn-off is 80km and from there to Witsand is 45km.
  • From Groblershoop on the N8 to the Witsand turn-off is 58km and from there to Witsand is 45km.
  • 5km west of Olifantshoek on the N14 is the Witsand turn-off and from there to Witsand is 75km.
