Dams and Rivers
The Gariep Dam (previously known as the Hendrick Verwoerd Dam) is the largest storage dam in South Africa, situated on the Orange River near Colesberg is a popular destination for boating and water sport enthusiasts.
The second biggest dam in South Africa, the Vanderkloof dam, is also situated within the Northern Cape province, about 130km downstream of the Gariep dam and also offers a variety of watersports, including skiiing, windsurfing, tubing and boating.
Other storage dams in the province include the Boegoeberg Dam (Orange River), the Douglas and the Vaalharts Storage Dams (Vaal River), Karee Dam (Karee River) and the Spitskop Dam(Harts River) and these offer opportunities for skiing, canoeing and sailing among other water based activites.
